[FILM REVIEW} A SECRET by Claude Miller

11.23.08

A SECRET

Directed by Claude Miller

Written by Claude Miller based on the book by Phillipe Grimbert

French language, with some Yiddish and German; with English subtitles

Review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large at BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

A modest, thoughtful, intimate portrayal of a family and group of friends in France before, during, and after World War II and the Nazi takeover.

The film tells the character-based story through flashbacks and multi-generational points of view, adhering closely to that of the narrator, whom we learn is the son and the writer of the book upon which the film is based.

Gorgeously filmed with authentic textures, capturing ordinary people in the grip of extraordinary struggles and passions that challenge their humanity and our understanding, albeit with great sympathy and sensitivity.

A smaller, more realistic and humane Sophie's Choice, told with greater empathy and examining the psychology of memory and repression in the guise of a mystery film.

With leading French actor Mathieu Amalric, best known for his performance in The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.
