Police, school administration apologize for terrorizing MMRHS students
11.7.08
Presumably out of "fairness" to all students, every female student who was videotaped entering a bathroom this past Monday at Monument Mountain Regional High School was cloistered in the school library for five hours the next day under armed police guard and interrogated one-by-one without the consent of or notification of parents, nor without explanation for why the student was so being interrogated.
Presumably the police and school administration could have culled the list of girls who had used said bathroom-- on which walls were scrawled another bomb threat -- but instead they decided out of "fairness" to all, and not to seem to be "prejudiced" or engaging in personal "profiling" which might damage a student's self-esteem, EVERY girl who entered that bathroom throughout that day -- regardless of the likelihood of her being reasonably considered a suspect -- was sequestered in this fashion and subjected to the intimidation of a police interview.
In this manner, whoever DID scrawl the "prank" bomb threats succeeded in "terrorizing" the Monument student body. Classic terrorism is not about the bomb; it's about provoking the reaction AGAINST the bomb by forcing the hand of a civil society to crack down against the civil liberties of its citizens.
And so we have seen the classic response on the part of the local police and school administration: with the installation of security cameras at the entrance to the school bathrooms and with the indiscriminate interrogation of students, casting a wide net and by doing so causing terror and distress to those subjected to this gross overreaction.
And now, apparently, we have an apology by the school principal for allowing this to happen:
-----------------------
Dear Monument Mountain Community,
This has been a stressful stretch of time for students, faculty and parents. During the course of this week, the police came to the school to investigate the recent bomb threats.
During the police interviews with students, students were held for long periods of time in the auditorium prior to and after their interviews with police and were interviewed without their parents’ presence.
The administrators at the school were informed that they should not impede the police investigation procedure.
We apologize for the suffering caused to students and parents. The School District, Police and Fire Departments will be meeting an conducting an incident review of the procedure and steps taken through the period of time.
