Two students arrested in Great Barrington high school bomb threats

11.4.08
TEXT OF LETTER SENT OUT TO SCHOOL COMMUNITY:

Dear Monument Mountain Community,

Last night we held a Parent Council meeting in which all parents were invited. For those of you unable to attend, below is a recap of the events of the last two weeks:

On Monday, October 27, a student notified us that there was a bomb threat written on the boys’ bathroom stall door. Police and Fire personnel were contacted immediately. The building was searched and the school deemed secure. We continued with the school day.

On Wednesday, October 29, a student notified us that there was a bomb threat written in the same boys’ bathroom, on a stall wall. This threat specified that a bomb would go off on Friday, October 31 at noon. Fire and police personnel were contacted immediately. Students were dismissed from school as police and the District office called the state bomb squad to come to the school to search the school. The state bomb squad was again contacted again Thursday, October 30 and Friday, October 31st. They were unable to schedule a search of the school. School was cancelled Thursday, October 31 and Friday, October 31st.

On Monday, November 3rd, a student notified us of a non-specific bomb threat on a girls’ bathroom stall wall. Police and Fire personnel were contacted immediately and the fire alarm was set off. Students evacuated the school as per fire alarm procedure. The fire department searched the school. At this time the District again contacted the state bomb squad. The state bomb squad scheduled a visit on Monday after 3pm. Students were evacuated to Muddy Brook Elementary School and were dismissed for the day at 1pm.

Today, police interviewed a number of students. One student was arrested in connection with the bomb threats and another student was arrested for impeding the investigation and disorderly conduct. The police will be continuing their investigation tomorrow. We will keep you informed.

During all three lunches today, Sean Flynn and Lisa Baldwin held student forums. Students spoke about their distress, the need to come together as a community and the need to reach out to each other and take back their community. They were impressive as always.

i am a student at monument mountain and i have witnessed the incidents that took place on those dates. I firmly believe that the students involved were driven to that act by separation in the community. that of which is not entirely our fault as a group. i also firmly believe that the school needs a strong leader in these situations who can be strong, who knows the things that needs to be said and say them, and needs to help bring the community together and not rely on members of the student body to lead the way. simple things like fundraising or field trips, things that can either bring us together more or to distract us from daily stresses that are very apparent at this time.

I, also, am a student at MMRHS, and I know from several direct sources that the interrogations were illegally performed. For starters, minors are not allowed to be interrogated without the knowledge of the parent. The Great Barrington police (who, to start, do not have a great reputation) assured all the students being held that parents WOULD be notified. However, at the end of the school day, after all the interrogations over (and one student arrested for the mere act of flipping off the officer. Although mabey not the best idea, it is not illegal either) none of the parents had any idea of what had happened. I believe that this is not the last that we will be hearing about this misconduct on the part of the GBPD.
