What's with the repetitive redundancies?

"Spending money." "Breast milk."
Excuse me -- are those modifiers really necessary?
Just this morning I came across these two phrases: the former in a note to parents (something about sending your child on a field trip with "spending money," to which my mind replied, "as opposed to what kind of money?"), and the latter in New York magazine regarding PETA's request that Ben and Jerry's make its ice cream with human "breast milk," human being the operative word here, not "breast," which isn't needed, as milk from any mammal, so far as I know, comes from a breast.
If there's one thing I can't stand it's sloppy language, especially excess verbiage. It's not a Hemingway thing, nor a newspaper thing -- it's just a belief that unless you're writing a novel (and even then, not always, unless you're a wordsmith like Mark Helprin, Salman Rushdie, or Martin Amis), less is always more, and makes for much better communication.
