Mahaiwe Theatre named to National Register of Historic Places

10.10.08

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) -- The Mahaiwe Theater, built in 1905 and launched as the year-round Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in 2005, has added one more laurel to its century-long history. The Mahaiwe is newly listed in the National Register for Historic Places. A special plaque is being installed later this fall, marking the permanent recognition status.

"This is another feather in the cap of this historic theater which will secure its place as the economic driver of the Southern Berkshires as well as its place in theatrical history" remarked State Representative Smitty Pignatelli.

“This momentous accomplishment reflects permanent recognition by the United States Department of the Interior for the significant cultural and historical value that the Mahaiwe represents to our Berkshire community”, says Lola Jaffe, President and Board Chair.
“It is the culmination of the beautiful $9 million restoration that took place from 2002-2006, and is a tribute to the generations who have kept the theater alive for vaudeville, movies and now non-stop performances”.

“We are delighted that the theater’s preservation was so successful as to reach national stature, and that our dynamic year-round programming is fulfilling its vision of bringing over 50,000 visitors and community members through historic downtown Great Barrington each year”, added Beryl Jolly, Executive Director.

The Mahaiwe Theater is one of the oldest surviving theaters in the country. In its early years, the theater presented touring vaudeville acts and performers such as John Philip Sousa. It was transformed into a movie palace in 1930 and has been in continuous operation for over 100 years, with Al Schwartz as theater manager since 1974.

Celebrated for its splendid acoustics, the theatre has played an important role in the life of the area as a community gathering place and home of exciting culture and entertainment.

The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center launched its first six-month presenting season with a Centennial Celebration in May 2005. The theater has recently been restored with great attention to historical detail. This process was overseen by noted architect, Hugh Hardy, with engineering and construction by skilled Berkshire craftspeople and artisans including Hill Engineers, Architects and Planners and Allegrone Construction Company. The theater is a recipient of support from Save America’s Treasures, as well as with grants from the Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism and HUD, and the historical restoration has been certified by both the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the National Park Service.

What does it mean? The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of the Nation's historic places worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed in the Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture. The National Register is administered by the National Park Service, which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

According to the National Park Services website, included among the over 80,000 listings that make up the National Register are Martin Luther King’s birthplace (Atlanta, GA, 1977) and The Apollo Mission Control Center (Houston, TX, 1985 ). Specific to Massachusetts; Arnold Arboretum (Boston, 1965); Arrowhead/Herman Melville House (Pittsfield, 1962); Symphony Hall (Boston,1999) and neighboring Clinton AME Zion Church will be listed alongside this September 2008 entry: The Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center in Great Barrington!

Now presenting its fourth full season in the restored venue, and celebrating its 103rd year as a theater, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is now open twelve months a year for music, dance, theater, opera, and classic films in the southern Berkshires. The theater presents and hosts over 100 live and broadcast events throughout the calendar year, including the tremendously popular Met Opera “Live in HD” series. The Mahaiwe strives to welcome the broadest possible community into our theater on an ongoing basis with affordable prices, nostalgic Monday Movies – and variety unmatched in the area under one roof.
