The [N.Y.] Sun may set for good

9.4.08
Very sad news hit the world of journalism today, as New York Sun founder and editor Seth Lipsky, a native of Great Barrington, Mass., wrote in the paper that unless someone or some group of investors comes to the rescue in the next few weeks, the paper could fold by the end of the month.

Since its launch in October 2001, the paper has added a vital, spunky, refreshing voice to the New York newspaper scene, previously divided into two camps: the indistinguishable tabloids (the Daily News and the New York Post) and the New York Times.

The Sun combined the intellectual heft of the Times with an independent outlook missing in daily journalism in New York. Its editorial page swung toward the right in a mostly liberal, progressive city, but its news columns were characterized mostly for feistiness and an unwillingness to buy into the prevailing notions of what were the big stories of the day, and how they should play in the media.

Along the way, the paper -- which while covering the world and the nation always did so from a New Yorker's perspective almost totally absent from the Times -- justly gained recognition for its arts and culture coverage, easily rivaling or surpassing that of the Times, which has become pop culture- and business-driven over the past decade.

The loss of the Sun would extinguish a small but mighty independent voice in New York and in newspaper journalism. For newshounds, it would be a real tragedy.

Read Seth Lipsky's analysis of the situation here.

Mr. Neocon, you're nothing if not confused: you bemoan the fact that a hard-right rag such as the New York Sun is down for the count while reacting to Ms. Palin being a crypto-nazi. You tout the likes of Dennis Praeger while talking about the likes of Bush staying on past '09. You constantly quote Commentary, Wall Street Journal, you can't seem to make the connection between members of OUR TRIBE (think Lieberman, Kristol, et al) in collusion with some of the worst monsters this country has ever known. Take out your Raul Hilberg (which I KNOW you've read) and see if you can make the connection between these lowlife, opportunistic neocons and those Jews who helped load other Jews onto cattle cars in 1942. Connect the dots, fer Chrissake. You're a college graduate, aren't you? Signed, Chaim Rumkowski

Seth Rogovoy replies:

Can a neocon support Barack Obama for president? Actually, I don't care. You can call me a neocon. You can call me a Scoop Jackson Democrat. You can call me Roguey. You still gotta serve somebody. And at least I have the courage of my convictions (however misguided or contradictory they may be -- but then again, consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds) and sign my real name. Come out of hiding, you coward.
