[A HEARTBEAT AWAY: THE SARAH PALIN WATCH]

9.2.08
Imagine for a moment, if you will, that Barack and Michelle Obama had an unmarried seventeen-year-old daughter, whom they suddenly revealed was five-months pregnant.

How do you think the conservative blogosphere would react?

Do you doubt for one second that they would jump all over this in the nastiest, most vicious way, playing up the most ugly racial stereotypes surrounding it? Blaming their parenting? Blaming their world outlook? Tying it to a lack of morality borne of the 1960s counterculture, by which both Barack and Michelle Obama were deeply influenced (literally so, in Barack's case, as his mother was the very definition of a 1960s hippie)?

So far the so-called pro-family, pro-life conservatives are HAILING Sarah and Bristol Palin as poster children for all that's good and cozy in the world, for the choices they've made, as a model family that sticks together and that doesn't abort unwanted pregnancies of retarded and illegitimate children. Somehow, this travesty of family morality is being twisted into a positive tale of traditional family values.

While we know full well if the same story came from the Obamas, it would be played and interpreted as precisely the opposite: as a reflection of supposed loose morality of American blacks. Indeed, it would no doubt cripple Barack Obama's run for president.

Don't buy into the conservative's marriage of convenience to Bristol Palin. Hold them accountable in the same way that the Obamas would be held accountable.

Fuck the high road. This is politics. This is war.

Seth,
Sadly, I agree with you. This is war. War is not a good thing.
