I haven't read the Philip Roth novel (The Dying Animal) UPon which the movie is based, but it doesn't matter -- Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz are outstanding in this intelligent, profound, sensual film about love, sex, aging, loneliness, and death. And Dennis Hopper even provides comic relief! What begins as a hot, steamy May-December affair between teacher-student, played by Kingsley and Cruz, turns bleak and dark and sad, then gets even bleaker. But it's all so smart and real that it doesn't matter. One of the year's best, destined to garner several Oscar nominations.
