The top-of-the-fold lead story in this morning's Berkshire Eagle newspaper, "Williams, Amherst share top-school ranking ," twice credits the oft-denigrated online user-run encyclopedia, Wikipedia, as a main source on the paper's front page.
This breaks new territory for journalism, especially the local journalism practiced by the Eagle, in this case in a story about one of the Berkshires' oldest institutions, Williams College (which has a press officer who was also quoted throughout the article).
No explanation was given regarding why the otherwise highly respected reporter of the story used Wikipedia, known as much for its biases and flawed information as for its usefulness, as the fount of facts that could have easily been garnered from a more reliable source.
