A month-long run of magic at the Triplex

7.30.08

Magician Carl Seiger will perform throughout August at the Triplex in Great Barrington, Mass.

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., July 30, 2008) – Upstairs Live at the Triplex is pleased to announce its first extended run of a show “Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger” for the five weekends in August. It plays at 9 pm every Friday and Saturday in August and Sunday, August 31st.

Carl Seiger, a Tyringham resident, has been working as a professional magician for over twenty years and has performed nationwide for audiences in a variety of venues ranging from stage and cabaret shows to corporate meetings and private parties.

In 1996, Seiger created and starred in a one-man theatrical show at the Barrington Stage Company, a production that merged the illusion of theater with the art of magic. The show ran for six weeks and received widespread critical and audience acclaim.

In the ensuing years, he has created and starred in other successful one-man magic shows. When he performed his show at the Florida Studio Theatre in Sarasota, the critic for the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, Jay Handeman wrote “Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes Carl Seiger to restore your faith in the magic of illusion that brings magic back to a human level. The joy is in watching him make you believe it’s all real.”

Gail Ryan, the former owner of the Williamsville Inn in West Stockbridge, who hired Seiger to perform there, echoes that sentiment. “He does the best up close magic I’ve ever seen. My guests and I would try to figure out how he did what he did, but never could. Everyone loved it. Carl’s phenomenal!”

Seiger is a self-taught magician and specializes in what the trade calls sleight-of-hand or “close-up“ magic, a special brand of the mysterious art. Close-up magic is differentiated from other styles primarily by the type of props used and the performing conditions. Deceptions are worked with ordinary objects: coins, cards, a wine glass – often in the audience’s hands.

Seiger also performs "cabaret" style magic: magic from the stage, again employing everyday objects rather than large illusions. With engaging conversation and natural movements, this sleight-of-hand artist will attempt to delude, deceive, astonish, and entertain.

When asked about the current market for magic, Carl says "...as long as people like to feel wonder … and get together and laugh with their friends, there is a good market for magic -- fun and laughter seem to stay in style."

For more information about “Magic Up Close with Carl Seiger” or to purchase tickets, go to www.thetriplex.com. The show runs approximately 75 minutes and tickets cost $20. Upstairs Live at the Triplex is located at 70 Railroad Street, Great Barrington.
