New Yorker illustrators to speak at The Mount
7.24.08
Creators of New Yorker’s “New Yorkistan”
Cover to Speak at The Mount
(Lenox, Mass,) -- The Mount, the estate designed by author Edith Wharton, will present a talk by illustrators and humorists Maira Kalman and Rick Meyerowitz, on Saturday, July 26, at 4 pm. Kalman and Meyerowitz created the most-talked-about New Yorker cover in years, "New Yorkistan," which was published three months after 9/11. The New York Times wrote, "when their cover came out, a dark cloud seemed to lift." According to Meyerowitz, the artists will offer “a cool, summery refreshment of an illustrated talk featuring some of our work, as well as our completely irrelevant musings on Edith Wharton and her times.” Admission is $18 in advance (by 5 pm, July 25) and $20 at the door. For reservations, call 413-551-5104.
Maira Kalman has written and illustrated a dozen children's books, and illustrated the classic writing manual The Elements of Style by Strunk and White. She has worked for the New York Times, The New Yorker, Interview, Travel and Leisure. and many other publications.
Rick Meyerowitz was the most prolific contributor of illustrated articles to the National Lampoon magazine. He created the poster for Animal House, and the Lampoon's trademark visual, The Mona Gorilla. Meyerowitz’s new book, DRUNK STONED BRILLIANT DEAD: The Writers and Artists Who Made the National Lampoon So Insanely Great, will be published in 2009.
The talk will take place in The Mount’s air-conditioned Stable Auditorium and will be followed by a book-signing on the terrace, where wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be available for purchase. The Mount is located at 2 Plunkett Street (just off Route 7) in Lenox, MA. For more information, call The Mount at 413-551-5104 or go online to www.edithwharton.org.
