Housatonic River Walk Announces Invasive Plant Workshop

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) -- The Great Barrington Housatonic River Walk will hold a special Exotic Invasive Plant workshop on Saturday July 26, 9 to noon. Workshop participants will learn about about non-native invasive plant identification and nontoxic eradication techniques employed along the Housatonic River Walk. Presenters will be Rachel Fletcher, founding director of River Walk, and restoration landscaper Heather Cupo of Plant Euphoria.

The workshop is free and is limited to 15 participants. Pre-register by contacting Rachel Fletcher, Housatonic River Walk, PO Box 1018, Great Barrington, MA 01230, tel: 413-528-3391 or river@gbriverwalk.org.

Located in the heart of downtown Great Barrington, the Housatonic River Walk is a citizen volunteer effort to reclaim riverfront access from trashed and abused areas. The work of 2100 volunteers, River Walk demonstrates simple, innovative methods to promote biodiversity and to protect the river’s resources. This unique trail location affords a rare opportunity to walk along the scenic Housatonic near the water’s edge. The River Walk easement is managed by the Great Barrington Land Conservancy.

For more information about River Walk events, visit the River Walk Home Page at www.gbriverwalk.org or contact Rachel Fletcher at 528-3391, or e-mail to: river@gbriverwalk.org

N.B. Look for an article on the threat of invasive plants to our region's ecosystem in the August 2008 issue of Berkshire Living.
