[DANCE REVIEW] Garth Fagan collaborates with Wynton Marsalis at Jacob's Pillow

GARTH FAGAN DANCE
Griot New York

June 18-22, 2008
Review by Seth Rogovoy
(Becket, Mass., June 18, 2008) -- Jacob's Pillow kicks off its summer 2008 season with a modern classic, a collaboration between two giants in their respective fields, choreographer Garth Fagan and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Wynton Marsalis, in the signature piece Griot New York.
While some of the dancing as seen on opening night was uneven -- the opening duo in particular seemed plucked out of the B or C company at Garth Fagan -- the best, as in the duet, Spring Yaounde, was nothing short of miraculous. By this time, Fagan's innovative, unique vocabulary had been well established, so that it was easy to follow his grammar, favoring torsos bent at right angles and as much horizontal movement on a horizontal plane as possible. Whether Fagan's choreography or Marsalis's writing for this piece came first is besides the point -- both artists challenged each to come up with a sensual and romantic interlude, and both wound up transcending their usual level of brilliance to come up with something in which the whole was greater than the parts.
Fagan also appropriately choreographed stop-start motions that blended perfectly with Marsalis's jazz, so that actions echoed music and vice-versa, somewhat in the tradition of Mark Morris.
After intermission, the full-length evening of dance continued with four more pieces.
