GOLEM returns to Club Helsinki for PURIM this Friday night

3.17.08
NYC Noisemakers Celebrate Purim
Golem Plays Club Helsinki

LIVE AT CLUB HELSINKI
Friday, April 25th - 9 PM
Tickets $20

(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass., March 17th, 2008) -- Golem returns to Club Helsinki on Friday, March 21st, to celebrate Purim, the Jewish holiday that commemorates Jewish liberation from the ancient Persian Empire. Put on your dancing shoes, because Purim (and a Golem show) is a rollicking holiday! Share some food, wine, and merrymaking with the folks in Golem this Purim! Expect traditional klezmer tunes, newer covers, and all kinds of adapted and rearranged sonic graggers ("noisemakers").

Golem's sound evokes wisps of old-world elegance filtered through the successes and disappointments of new-world dreams. Spending nights in Lower East Side immigrant-owned bagel shops and summers in Eastern Europe, frontwoman Annette Ezekiel collects Jewish, Gypsy, and Slavic folk songs, and, with Golem, reinterprets them with a refreshingly attentive contemporary perspective. These are the songs to which Eastern European grandparents danced over a century ago, and now Golem has its unwrinkled fans moshing to the same pulsing beats.

Founder and visionary leader of Golem, Annette Ezekiel is an eccentric linguist, fluent in five languages, who avidly researches Eastern European music, dance and literature. After playing classical piano, Annette picked up the accordion in order to learn Ukrainian and Russian tunes, and then fell in love with Yiddish song. Through research and travel, she brings material to the band and adds the twist of rock and roll that is Golem.

Singer of the enigmatic rock band Challenge of the Future, Aaron Diskin brings his wild vocal stylings and abundant charisma to the Yiddish songs of Golem. You can also see him looking towards a synthetic future with Lycaon Pictus.

A trombonist, guitarist and composer, Curtis Hasselbring mixes up his musical life by playing everything from jazz to country rock to electronic works as CURHA and with his ensemble, New Mellow Edwards. He has recorded and toured internationally with many leading artists including Medeski, Martin and Wood, The Jazz Passengers, Ron Sexsmith, Benny Carter, Anthony Coleman and John Zorn.

Alicia Jo Rabins's first violin lesson at the age of 3 led to years of classical study, followed by a few stints in punk rock bands. Alicia was a founding member of cutting-edge folk group, The Mammals, and can be seen with old-time trio, Underbelly. She released a solo album, Sugar Shack, in 2003.

Bassist Taylor Bergren-Chrisman can be spotted playing with bands like The Rare Bird Rhumba Ranch and Las Rubias del Norte.

Drummer Tim Monaghan currently attends the New School, studying jazz with such masters as Billy Hart, Buster Williams, and Gerry Hemingway. Tim performs music from numerous countries and styles, from rock to jazz to improv / noise.

Tickets are $20 and are available in advance at Club Helsinki or Helsinki Café (284 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA), by calling (413) 528 3394 or online at www.clubhelsinkiweb.com.
