The world's best single-malt Scotch whisky

12.1.07
My friends make fun of what they view as my odd taste in liquor, my favorite pour being Laphroaig single-malt Scotch whisky. One in particular insists it reeks of "black magic marker."

Turns out I'm not alone in my enthusiasm for the rarefied spirit. In today's Wall Street Journal, columnist Eric Felten, in "Expensive Tastes," sings the praises of Laphroaig (quoting an expert in single malts who once told him, "Learn to drink this, and everything else will be easy") in general, and in particular, the whisky's 30-year-old variety (which I don't think I've ever had the pleasure of consuming).

So anyone wondering what to buy me for the holidays, feel free to take this posting as a hint.

it seems that the more i spend on a glass/bottle of of single-malt i am just not as satisfied then if i order a dewars. i think the blended scotch is just fine. my 12-year-old Glen Livet manages to collect dust in the meantime. above is a link you might fight interesting from this week's NYTimes on my other choice libation.

Seth Rogovoy replies:

If your experience with single malts is limited to the most popular Glenlivet and Glenfiddich, then I could understand why you would not see much of a difference -- or that it wouldn't seem worth the price -- versus Dewars (although for a blend I much prefer Johnnie Walker Red).

But the difference between Dewars and single malts like Laphroaig, Lagavulin, Macallans, Talkisker, Oban, etc. -- besides the price -- is nearly the difference between apples and bananas. Basic blended Scotch whisky and a mid- to high-end single malt are totally different creatures.

For a reasonably priced hint at what a single malt has to offer over a blended whisky, start with Bowmore, which you should be able to find for $25 a bottle.

You rock!

On a recent trip to Scotland, I was looking for single malts to sample, and inquired at a liquor emporium as to the best available. THey steered me away from Islay malts as being "too peaty" or musky of taste to be drunk by "normal" scotch drinkers. Naturally I ignored their advice and discovered (on my return to the states) the incredible drinking experience of LaPhroaig. Easily my favorite, although I plan on sampling many more lowland, highland, Islay and any other single-malts I can find. Peace-out. RJ

Seth, You must try The Balvenie, Doublewood, 12yo single malt. It might still be on sale at Domaney's. I think you'll like it.
