Sending our boys off to injury and death on the battlefields -- and the playing fields
10.27.07
Is it any surprise that our nation hasn't risen up in mass protest at the mass sacrifice of our young men in Iraq like so much cannon fodder when every fall weekend across the nation, parents and school administrators display the same disregard for the health and welfare of our youth on high school football fields?
According to an article in today's New York Times, the barbaric, violent spectacle that is America's number-one pastime, high school football, winds up causing concussions leading to persistent memory problems, depression, coma, and even death in approximately ten to fifty percent of players.
And the idea that a new, improved, high-tech football helmet will solve the scourge of life-ruining or life-threatening injuries makes as much sense as encouraging people to practice unsafe sex so they can contract AIDS so we can self them expensive drug treatments, or spending billions of dollars on research on lung transplants so people can continue smoking and not have to worry about lung damage down the road because when the time comes their diseased organs can merely be replaced.
Why don't we just feed these young men to hungry lions and get the games over with early so we can retire to the bar?

Seth,
There are many dangerous sports such as skiing and snowboarding and did I not read an article recently about all those concussions that come from heading the ball in soccer? As a former high school football player, I cherish my years on the team and playing the game. In many ways, it was te most wholesome experience of my life. So I think safer helmets are a great idea because football is truly an all American sport in the very best sense
