BERKSHIRE BACH SOCIETY and ANI & IDA KAVAFIAN in BACH, VIVALDI, HANDEL, MOZART CONCERTOFEST

9.14.07
"Good things come in two's" might be the motto of the Berkshire Bach Society this October as they present a double offering of eighteenth century concertos for a Grand Concertofest on two successive evenings in two estimable Berkshire venues. Heading the crowded bill of soloists will be a formidable pair of violinist-sisters, Ani and Ida Kavafian, but also included will be the equally accomplished paired oboes of Alexandra Knoll and Marsha Heller, the singular talents of mezzo-soprano Shirin Eskandani and percussionist Peter Wilson, and the unique Kenneth Cooper who occupies the double role of harpsichord soloist and orchestra director. All of this double-sized talent will flow through two different programs, one on Friday, October 5 at the Mahaiwe Theater in Great Barrington, and the other on Saturday, October 6 at the Colonial Theatre in Pittsfield. Both programs start at 8 pm.

The Friday program at the Mahaiwe will feature the extraordinary Sinfonia Concertante in E flat by Mozart, with Ani on violin, Ida on viola, and Cooper conducting the Berkshire Bach Players. An additional pair of earlier double concertos (Vivaldi for two oboes and Bach for two violins) supplemented by a Handel aria fill out the Mahaiwe program. Tickets are available through the Mahaiwe box office, 413-528-0100, at $20, $30, and $40, free for students.

The next night, Saturday, at the Colonial, two Vivaldi offerings are featured: another double concerto (this one for violins), and a solo work: the Vivaldi Seasons (which is actually a double pair of concertos, one for each season) with Ani Kavafian recapitulating her spectacular performance of several seasons back, this time for the benefit of the Pittsfield audience. These will be joined by a pair of Bach compositions: the solo Cantata no. 53, and Concerto no. 3 for harpsichord, showcasing the vocal talents of Shirin Eskandani and the spontaneous inspirations of Maestro Cooper. Tickets are available through the Colonial box office, 413-997-4444, at $15, $30, $40, free for students.

Ani Kavafian's career has been marked by great diversity, full of chamber music, concertos with orchestras, recitals, and teaching. She has performed with the New York Philharmonic as a winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, and has soloed with the Philadelphia and Cleveland orchestras, as well as with the symphonies of Detroit, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh, among many others. Her numerous recordings include the Bach Sonatas with Kenneth Cooper on the fortepiano, recorded subsequent to performances for the Berkshire Bach Society. She has also recorded Mozart Sonatas with Jorge Federico Osorio, Henri Lazarof's Divertimento for Violin and String Orchestra with the Seattle Symphony and Tod Machover's "Forever and Ever" for computerized Violin and Orchestra with the Boston Modern. The 2007-2008 season will include numerous tours, including the Far East, and across the United States, performing duos with her sister, Ida, and trios with the Kavafian/Schub/Shifrin Trio (K*SS), the Triton Horn Trio with Bill Purvis and Mihae Lee, and of course performances with The Chamber Music Society. She was a winner of the Young Concert Artist International Auditions and has recently been elected president of their Alumni Association. She performs on a 1736 Stradivarius.

Violinist/Violist Ida Kavafian enjoys an international reputation as one of the most active and versatile musicians performing today. Artist-Member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and former Violinist of the renowned Beaux Arts Trio, some of her many activities presently include performing as a soloist, in recital, with her sister Ani, as a guest with ensembles such as the Guarneri, Orion and American String Quartets, as Artistic Director of the highly successful festival, Music from Angel Fire in NM, and as a faculty member at the Curtis Institute and the Conservatory of Music at Bard College. Born in Istanbul, Turkey of Armenian parentage, she is a graduate of the Juilliard School where she was a student of Oscar Shumsky. She was presented in her debut by Young Concert Artists with pianist Peter Serkin and was a winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant.
