[MUSIC REVIEW] Orchestra of the 18th Century at Tanglewood

TANGLEWOOD
OZAWA HALL
Orchestra of the 18th Century
Review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large of BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine
(LENOX, Mass., Aug 23, 2007) -- Under the baton of conductor Frans Bruggen, the Orchestra of the 18th Century -- a 21st century Dutch period ensemble -- performed a 19th century program on Tuesday night.
The first half of the program consisted of a rendition of Schubert's Symphony No. 8 in B-Minor, best known to the populace as Schubert's Unfinished symphony.
In Bruggen's hands, there was nothing unfinished about this work. He wrung both delicacy and dynamics out of his ensemble, especially in the dark, moody contrasts that make up the bulk of the work.
The musicians dug in hard and the sound was as much about texture as it was about melody. Bruggen put it all together and made it one of the best-sounding concerts of the summer season, in this case part of NL: A Festival of Dutch Arts in the Berkshires.
The program also consisted of Schubert's Symphony in C, The Great, but deadline pressure did not allow this reviewer to attend the second half of the concert.
