[THEATER REVIEW] MRS WARRENS PROFESSION at BERKSHIRE THEATRE FESTIVAL

8.17.07
BERKSHIRE THEATRE FESTIVAL
Mrs. Warren's Profession by George Bernard Shaw
Mainstage

Review by SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large of BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

(STOCKBRIDGE, Mass.) -- George Bernard Shaw's Mrs. Warren's Profession is being given a totally solid, humanist production on the main stage at the Berkshire Theatre Festival this week.

Director Anders Cato has chosen to let the emphasis be on the characters and the script, and so the stage business is minimal or even minimalist, other than the very evocative sound design by Scott Killian, accompanied by video production in between scenes, contextualizing the play.

The ensemble of actors is fully up to the task laid before them in a play that otherwise can succumb to a bit of preachiness. But the actors do their best to bring the characters to life as people, and not as Shaw's strawmen or stand-ins for specific social types.
