[FILM REVIEW] Sicko

7.25.07
SICKO
Directed by Michael Moore

By SETH ROGOVOY, editor-in-chief and critic-at-large, BERKSHIRE LIVING Magazine

One part horror film, one part farcical comedy, Michael Moore's SICKO relies on his usual tactics of guerrilla filmmaking, gee-whiz dialectics, and staged happenings -- in this case, taking a boatload of unhealthy people, including three 9/11 emergency workers to the prison at Guantanamo Bay naval base to get them the high-quality care unavailable to them in the U.S. but guaranteed to the high-level Al Qaeda operatives being held there -- to make his overall point: that our health care system is utterly dysfunctional, especially when compared to those in Western Europe and even in poor nations like Cuba.

While Moore is as guilty as ever of taking things totally out of context to the point that if he continues down this path he may render himself utterly irrelevant as a muckraker, he DOES succeed in making his point and hammering home the ultimate, provocative question: if France, England, Canada, and Cuba can provide national single-payer health insurance, why can't the richest nation in the world do the same?
