[DANCE REVIEW] Nederlands Dans Theater II at Jacob's Pillow

Dreams Interpreted by a Young Troupe

BECKET, Mass., July 7 — The now-defunct Nederlands Dans Theater III was composed of veteran performers who had moved on from the Nederlands Dans Theater, the leading Dutch modern-dance troupe. The challenges and inspiration of these dancers’ older bodies and burnished theatricality made for some fascinating and provocative new choreography.

And so you might expect that the youth and freshness of the Nederlands Dans Theater II, a troupe of newer dancers under 23, might be similarly inspiring. But youth was wasted on Jiri Kylian, the companies’ visionary former director, and Hans van Manen, judging by the dances they contributed to a program by the younger troupe on Friday night at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival as part of “NL: A Season of Dutch Arts in the Berkshires.” It was left to Johan Inger, whose “Dream Play” completed the program, to celebrate young dancers’ distinctions.
