[AUDIENCE ETIQUETTE] Hold the applause, please

7.1.07
As rreviously noted in my blogpost,
Vulgar applause mars performances, the rash of intra-dance, play, and concert clapping is interfering with the enjoyment of going to see dance, theater, and music.

Apparently this isn't just the case here in the Berkshires. While it is ostensibly about the "entrance hand," where theatergoers in New York City clap for celebrities when they make their entrances, Enter Acting, Pursued by Applause, an article in today's New York Times, discusses the merits and demerits of this behavior.

Of particular note is a quote from Vladimir Konecni, Vladimir Konecni, a professor of psychology at University of California, San Diego, who has studied the psychology of theater. Konecni notes that while the “joiners” of the entrance applause are most likely engaging in a simple case of imitation, the applause starter is harder to explain.

“Elitism is absolutely the issue,” Professor Konecni said. “I have good taste, I have money, I have sensitivity, I am rewarding myself mentally.” One feels a giddy sense of accomplishment, he said, for having made it into the same room as Kevin Spacey.

As I suspected in my original post, this improper use of applause says more about the perverted psychology of the clapper than it does about the merits of the performance.

It is now up to theaters and venues to educate audiences about when and how to applaud. Just as they request cellphones to be turned off, so too should opening remarks include "Please hold all applause until the end of the performance."
