Photographers of Berkshire Living on exhibit at Berkshire Museum

25 WORKS BY THE PHOTOGRAPHERS OF BERKSHIRE LIVING ON VIEW AT BERKSHIRE MUSEUM MAY 12 TO JUNE 17

PITTSFIELD, MA (May 1, 2007) – The Berkshire Museum in downtown Pittsfield is presenting an exhibition of works by photographers featured in the award-winning regional magazine Berkshire Living from May 12 to June 17. The Photographers of Berkshire Living features 25 original photographs by five Berkshire Living contributors: Scott Barrow, Gregory Cherin, Jason Houston, Kevin Sprague, and Will Wendt.

“Many of our photographers are like Superman: by day they’re editorial photographers on assignment; by night they morph into fine art sharpshooters,” said Seth Rogovoy, editor-in-chief of Berkshire Living and guest curator of the exhibition.

With title’s referencing the longitude and latitude where they are taken, Scott Barrow’s giclee print photographs are about a connection to place. Barrow’s photographs have appeared in group and one-man shows in New York City as well as hundreds of magazines, annual reports, advertisements, and coffee-table books.

Gregory Cherin began taking photographs as a nine-year-old, when his father brought him to the National Geographic Photographers lecture series in Washington, D.C. His work has been published hundreds of times in many national magazines, newspapers, annual reports, brochures, books, catalogs and advertisements. His portraits in black and white and color capture casual and dramatic moods.

Jason Houston provides a glimpse of a personal world through his photographs capturing spontaneous moments at family celebrations: Christmas, Easter, July 4, Mardi, Gras. Houston’s photography has been featured in print media and online around the world, as well as in recent exhibitions at Yale University and Spike Gallery in New York City.

Kevin Sprague’s new series of untitled prints on canvas are about “the embodiment of inspiration and creativity." Sprague has been creating photographs and composing images for commercial and institutional clients for over a decade. He is currently completing a graphic novel entitled Muse incorporating thousands of images into a narrative.

Seven images from Will Wendt’s 2006 series Found Fashion: Leisure Time in the Berkshires, depict “awesome displays of hedonism” in this resort area. Wendt’s work was recently featured in the exhibition A Rabbit as the King of Ghosts at the Mitchell, Inness, and Nash Gallery in Manhattan and has appeared in The New York Times Magazine.

The exhibition will also include a living room seating area beautifully furnished by Paul Rich & Sons, Pittsfield.

The Photographers of Berkshire Living is one of three exhibitions on view in connection with the Berkshire Museum's biennial wine auction, “The Art of Wine...Past Present, and Futures,” on May 19. Also on view will be The Art of Wine, featuring original art for wine labels, and The Art of Food, featuring art and decorative arts from the Berkshire Museum collection. Both are on view May 19 through June 17.

The Berkshire Museum is located at 39 South Street on Route 7 in Downtown Pittsfield. The galleries are open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays noon to 5 p.m. For more information, contact the Berkshire Museum at (413) 443-7171, ext. 10, or visit berkshiremuseum.org.
