BERKSHIRE LIVING GRABS THE GOLD

BERKSHIRE LIVING GARNERS GOLD MEDAL FOR GENERAL EXCELLENCE
Magazine also wins for Community Service and General Criticism

(Great Barrington, Mass., May 10, 2007) – Berkshire Living, the region’s premier culture and lifestyle magazine, won a gold award for General Excellence in its circulation category in the 22nd Annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards competition, announced May 7th at CRMA’s annual conference in Denver.

In only its second year of eligibility, the two-year-old magazine also returned from Denver with a silver award for Community Service for its “Rest of the Story” series of public forums and a bronze award for General Criticism, for editor-in-chief and critic-at-large Seth Rogovoy’s “The Beat Goes On” column.

“We are immensely gratified to receive this national recognition, but no more so than we are to garner continuous positive feedback from our readers and advertisers right here in the Berkshires,” said founder and publisher Michael Zivyak.

“We on the staff at Berkshire Living share this award with all our freelance contributors – writers, photographers, and illustrators,” said Rogovoy. “Without them, we obviously couldn’t put together the beautiful magazine that has caught on so strongly in the region since our debut in December 2004.”

The CRMA judges summed up Berkshire Living’s accomplishments thusly: “Berkshire Living’s combination of top-notch journalism, breathtaking photography, and innovative packaging put it on par with many larger-budget, bigger-staffed national magazines. … It is, without a doubt, the ‘smart guide’ to exploring the Berkshires. … For residents, the magazine casts a new light on familiar faces and places, and reminds readers of all there is to discover (or re-discover) in the region. For tourists, this is their veritable bible of weekend activities, from outdoor hikes to museum exhibits and dance performances. The Berkshires have always been an interesting mix of country and cosmopolitan, and Berkshire Living captures this identity perfectly ….”

Last year, its first year of eligibility, Berkshire Living surprised CRMA members by walking away with awards for General Excellence (Bronze) and General Criticism (Bronze).

Seventy-three judges representing 35 publications, including Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Better Homes and Gardens, The Chicago Tribune, Men’s Journal, Essence, Gourmet, National Geographic, Bon Appétit, Marie Claire, The New York Times, ESPN The Magazine, Glamour, The Washington Post, Marie Claire, Gourmet and journalism scholars from the Missouri School of Journalism selected the finalists.

The competition is open to almost 100 members of CRMA and other non-member city and regional magazines throughout North America that qualify. The contest is a 22-year-old national competition and has been coordinated by the University of Missouri School of Journalism on behalf of CRMA for the past 11 years.
