[MUSIC REVIEW] Pizzarelli, Serkin, and high school bands light up Mahaiwe
3.11.07
JOHN PIZZARELLI QUARTET (March 10, 2007)
MONUMENT MOUNTAIN REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL BANDS (March 9, 2007)
with special guest PETER SERKIN
at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center
review by SETH ROGOVOY, award-wining critic-at-large for BERKSHIRE LIVING
(GREAT BARRINGTON, Mass.) -- It was a triumphant weekend at the Mahaiwe, with two sold out shows in a row this past Friday and Saturday. But more than that, the shows demonstrated the potential for the Mahaiwe to be both a presenter of world-class entertainment and a great community asset.
Our high school concert and jazz bands, under the leadership of Jeffrey Stevens, are always head-and-shoulders above other such outfits. But on this night the bands truly rose to the occasion, given the surroundings and the unique opportunity to perform with world-class virtuoso pianist and band parent Peter Serkin, who played a piece of Beethoven with the concert band.
The community came out in force for the show, and it was truly a spectacular night.
The following night, singer/guitarist John Pizzarelli showed why he's one of the most popular entertainers on the concert jazz circuit. A fabulous guitarist, what Pizzarelli lacks in vocal color and tone he more than makes up for in deft phrasing, cool swinging, and a terrific sense of humor. In his first set, he played several standards before switching to a beautiful acoustic guitar made in Brazil (not before telling an hysterical story about how he came to possess the axe) and performed several songs in the bossa nova style.
The stars were truly shining at the Mahaiwe all weekend, with the promise of many more like this to come.
