GOLEMS to INVADE GREAT BARRINGTON

12.16.06
Night of the Living Golems coming to Great Barrington Sunday December 17

(Great Barrington, Mass.) – In a unique partnership, the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center and Club Helsinki are teaming up to present Golem Squared, a multimedia night celebrating the Jewish legend of the golem, the Frankenstein-like protector of the Jewish community in medieval Prague, with film and live music, on Sunday, December 17, the third night of Hanukah.

The evening’s festivities will kick off with a screening of the silent 1920 German Expressionist silent film The Golem-—a co-presentation of the Southern Berkshire Film Festival, at the Mahaiwe at 8 p.m.—-accompanied with a live score by guitarist/composer Gary Lucas, a pioneer of avant-garde musicians playing original live scores to old silent films. Just last month, Lucas was honored with a backstage visit from former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel and former Talking Heads members David Byrne and Jerry Harrison at the Knitting Factory in New York City, on the occasion of a special concert with Lucas's band Gods and Monsters and his friends in the legendary Czech rock band Plastic People of the Universe.

New York Yiddish/klezmer outfit Golem, a perennial favorite, will kick off a concert in their inimitable punk-klezmer style at Club Helsinki at 9 p.m., featuring old chestnuts like “Bay Mir Bistu Sheyn” and “Rumania, Rumania” alongside songs from the group's brand-new CD, “Fresh Off Boat.” The band is led by singer/accordionist Annette Ezekiel, and features violinist Alicia Jo Rabins—-a founding member of the trad-rad folk band The Mammals-—along with co-vocalist Aaron Diskin. The band is promising a surprise guest appearance, who may or may not be an actual living golem.

Berkshire Living editor-in-chief Seth Rogovoy, the author of The Essential Klezmer-—which includes information on both Gary Lucas and Golem—-will emcee the Golem concert at Helsinki.

Tickets for the screening of The Golem with Gary Lucas at the Mahaiwe are $12.50 and are available by calling 413.528.0100 or from www.mahaiwe.org. Tickets for the concert by Golem at Club Helsinki are $20 and are available by calling 413.528.3394 or from www.clubhelsinkiweb.com. Tickets to Helsinki concerts guarantee admission only; priority seating is given to those who make dinner reservations before the show.
