Kill or expel them, then glorify them

We've seen this sort of phenomenon before -- in Poland, in Germany, in other parts of Eastern Europe -- and now, in "With Jewish Roots Now Prized, Spain Starts Digging," in today's New York Times we read about the morbid fascination thousands of Spaniards have towards their ghostly former neighbors, the Jews.

"Cities and towns across Spain are searching for the remains of their medieval synagogues, excavating old Jewish neighborhoods and trying to identify Jewish cemeteries," reports the Times. "Scholars say they are overwhelmed with requests from local governments to study archaeological findings and ancient documents that may validate a region's Jewish heritage."

Even more than looking to dig up Jewish bones and buildings, many contemporary Spaniards are hoping to discover Jewish blood running through their veins. “It's the opposite of 300 years ago when people changed their last names to Spanish names and looked for ancestors of pure Spanish blood,” he said. “Now it's trendy to say you have Jewish roots.”

For hundreds of years, of course, Jews and Jewish culture thrived in Spain, making it something of a second Jerusalem, until the Inquisition and explusion of 1492.

But with all this nostalgia for Spain's Jewish past, so too has Jew-hatred reared its ugly head in a nation of fewer than 50,000 Jews.

“A contradictory element in all this is that a new anti-Semitism is also developing in Spain,” said Jacobo Israel Garzón, the president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain. “It uses the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as its source, but it passes very quickly from anti-Israelism to anti-Semitism.”
