Pope threatened, nun slain, churches attacked, but we're not at war

With an English Muslim extremist leader calling for the assassination of the Pope, with the murder of a nun in Somalia, with continued attacks on churches in Muslim nations around the world, and threats to "behead" anyone who insults Islam, one would think that non-Muslim Westerners might finally be getting the message that there's a war at hand, and not a "clash of cultures" or "clash of civilizations."

Instead, clueless if perhaps well-meaning types keep asking themselves, "Gee, what did we do to make them so angry?"

With a broader perspective on this whole subject I would suggest four recent articles.
The New Yorker dated 9/11, two articles one by Lawrence Wright and the other by George Packer. The 10/19 issue of the New York Review of Books piece by Robert Worth and 9/22 lead editorial in the newspaper the Forward.
