Easing WHOSE fears?

9.17.06
A bizarre Orwellian sentence from an article in today's New YOrk Times ("Vatican Says Pope Benedict Regrets Offending Muslims" leaps out at the reader for its Orwellian chilliness:

in the aftermath of the brouhaha over the Pope's recent comments regarding Islam's historical (and in some quarters, comtemporary) penchant for proselytizing at the end of a sword, the state-owned Jordanian daily newspaper Al Rai said the pope should apologize “so as to ease the fears of Muslims who sense they are becoming the target of an orchestrated campaign.”

Excuse me -- which orchestrated campaign would that be? The one wherein Osama bin Laden has called on the entire Muslim world to attack all infidels and all Muslims who are suspect in their zeal?

The campaign in which in Somalia, a radical cleric was reported to have urged Muslims to “hunt down” the pope for remarks that he called “barbaric.”

“Whoever offends our Prophet Muhammad should be killed on the spot by the nearest Muslim,” the cleric, Sheik Abubakar Hassan Malin, told worshipers in Mogadishu on Friday, Agence France-Presse reported.

The campaign in which two churches were damaged in fire bombings in Nablus after a group calling itself the “Lions of Monotheism” said the attacks were in reaction to the pope’s remarks?
