NYC's Jewish music festival

9.12.06
Back from a few days in NYC, including a visit to last night's second annual Jewish Music Awards sponsored by oyhoo!, the festival promoters, for which I served as one of two dozen or so judges. The fun event saw Bob Dylan get the award for best singer-songwriter (beating out Leonard Cohen and Neshama Carlebach, among others); my good friends from Golem winning for "best rock band" either thought they're pretty much anything but; and the irrepressible Klezmatics winning for best klezmer band. The lovely Basya Schechter and Daphne Mor won not one but two awards on behalf of their group, Pharaoah's Daughter -- I'm not sure i remember the categories, but one was Middle Eastern and the other, ??, crossover???

John Zorn
got a well deserved win for best combination of jazz and heritage music, and also garnered a rave review in yesterday's New york Times, "A Most Prolific Composer Opens His Book of Angels" , by jazz critic Ben Ratliff, reviewing the kickoff show to the week's amazing festival, which you shouldn't miss.
