Don't play loose with 'Fascism'

9.2.06
Giving credit where credit is due, in "More Ravings from Rumsfeld ," the editorial page of the Berkshire Eagle today makes a good point that the promiscuous use of the word "Fascism" by members of the Bush administration (and, as a result, by pundits and the public) in regard to Islamic terrorists is misguided at best and downright wrong and insulting at worst.

At best, it is inflammatory to equate bin Laden and al Qaeda with Hitler and the Nazis -- while there may be some resemblances in their ultimate aims, there are enough differences that we ought to be able to call them specifically what they are without lumping them together for shock effect.

At worst, to equate al Qaeda with Nazis is a gross insult to those and those whose families suffered under the reign of Hitler. By loosely using terms like "Nazi" and "Fascist," the terms are cheapened and demeaned. They mean very specific things, and neither really means Islamist.

So let's call a spade a spade -- bin Laden and al Qaeda and Hezbollah and its ilk are Islamists, or radical Islamists, if you will, bent on spreading their violent, oppressive brand of Islam all over the world (taking it to the infidels, especially those in the West) through jihad using whatever methods they can, including terrorism, subversion, missiles, and even democratic elections, if they get the chance.

That's enough to beg for a call to action to stop them in their tracks.

P.S. I think I may have used the term "Islamofascism" and/or "Islamofascist" in writing and speech, in haste, over the past year. I regret having used this term; and I apologize to my grandmother and myself for doing so, as it is an insult to her and my own memory and legacy as victims of the Nazis.
