Colonial garners national attention

8.29.06
Pittsfield's Colonial Theatre, set to open this week with the touring production of RENT, garnered national attention this morning with a front-page story, "A City Plots Its Future by Reaching Into the Past ," in the arts section of the New York Times.

While the article is mostly positive, it does dig deep enough into the hopes pinned on the Colonial as the centerpiece of Pittsfield's much-touted arts-fueled downtown revival to come up with a few skeptics, among them Jonathan Levine, publisher of the Pittsfield Gazette, who questions the business projections behind the project.

“They’ve made all these economic development promises,” Mr. Levine is quoted saying, “and there is no way, with their current programming, they can achieve those goals.”
