Uneven selections from Pacific Northwest Ballet

BECKET, Mass. -- Up close, ballet dancers are much less ethereal and much more interesting.

In the 620-seat Ted Shawn Theatre at Jacob's Pillow, as opposed to larger regional venues like SPAC and Proctor's Theatre, you can see their muscles flex, hear their toe shoes squeak and catch the expressions on their faces.

That said, the Pacific Northwest Ballet, making a rare East Coast appearance this week at the Pillow (the first in 10 years), has chosen an uneven selection of dances with which to showcase the company in this intimate setting. The four works on the program predate the selection of former New York City Ballet dancer Peter Boal as artistic director in 2005, and feature just 15 of the company's 43 dancers.
