(Eagle Watch #10) Where are the Tanglewood Jazz reviews?

9.6.05
This past weekend featured the unofficial end of the Berkshire culture season with the annual Labor Day weekend Tanglewood Jazz Festival, which began last Friday, September 2nd, and concluded on Sunday, September 4.

As of today (Tuesday, September 6th), there have been no reviews of any of the concerts published in the hometown paper, the Berkshire Eagle.

Traditionally, the Eagle runs reviews of Tanglewood's Friday night concerts on Sunday and Saturday and Sunday concerts on Monday.

You CAN, however, read reviews of Sunday's Sonny Rollins concert in the Albany Times Union ("Rollins delivers seminar in sound" by Michael Eck), which ran the very next day, and a review of nearly the whole weekend's activities in the Boston Globe (
"At Tanglewood, a dazzling array of jazz talent"
) by Bill Beuttler, which also ran on Monday.

There was a very fine review of the entire Jazz Festival in Wednesday's Eagle

Seth Rogovoy Replies:

Yes indeed, there finally was a review published in the Eagle, three days after the festival ended. You can read it at
Katrina's presence felt at Tanglewood jazz fest

Since I only attended the afternoon concert by Marian McPartland and Madeline Peyroux, I cannot comment on the substance of the review other than the one paragraph commenting on that show:

"Marian McPartland, taping her "Piano Jazz" radio show, her fourth at Tanglewood, was courteous, but seemed bewildered by her guest, the singer and guitarist Madeleine Peyroux. An American discovered while singing in the streets of Paris, Peyroux has yet to develop the requisite sense of pitch or rhythm and has little presence, whether intoning in English or French."

"Bewildered," indeed! McPartland at times seemed not to even know the name of her guest; she struggled to get through the two sets with anything interesting to say or ask; she evidenced no familiarity at all with Peyroux's work; and when Peyroux said she was going to sing a Bessie Smith song, McPartland unaccountably asked her if she wrote it!

It seems like it might be time for McPartland to hang up her Piano Jazz shoes.....

Incidentally, I don't want to violate anyone's privacy, but it is curious that the comment above was sent by someone who lives in the same town as the Eagle reviewer and bears the same first name as the reviewer's spouse.....
