(Culture Review) Cultural correlatives

7.21.05
One of the benefits of seeing so many different cultural events in a short span of time is how eventually everything begins to reflect upon everything else. For example, in the last few weeks, hearing the BSO play Wagner conducted by James Levine put the soundtrack to Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS in new perspective, and Wagner's brassy thunder echoed the next day throught new works by Wuorinen and Harbison. The Wuroinen work seemed very much the musical correlative to Ian McEwan's recent novel, SATURDAY, while the simple, narrative emphasis of Garth Fagan's choreography seemed to harken to Wagner's literal-minded, programmitic music at the same time that his emphasis on horizontal lines looked back to a performance at Jacob's Pillow a week earlier by Ben Munisteri Dance Projects.

The experimental dance/theater troupe, CHUNKY MOVE, from Australia, seemed equally influenced by David Byrne, David LYnch, and Quentin Tarantino, which everyone who performs at Jacob's Pillow is indebted to Martha Graham, whose company kicked off the summer season.

And then, of course, there was the MARCH OF THE PENGUINS to put it all into perspective. Just be glad you're not a penguin.
