May 30, 2005 The reopening of the Mahaiwe Theatre (now awkwardly renamed the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, yuck!) on Sunday night, May 29, was a spectacular event that will be remembered and treasured always by the 700 folks who were lucky enough to get tickets (the event sold out WEEKS in advance). The program was fun, sweet, touching, and inspiring. An original show pieced together from original narrative, recitation, well-known songs, film clips, comedy routines, skits, dance, music, and some performance art, all couched as taking the audience through 100 years of Mahaiwe history (the theater opened 100 years ago next September -- see the June issue of BERKSHIRE LIVING for the lowdown by yours truly). The show did a terrific job of putting the Mahaiwe into a cultural/historical context without being overly academic, but one gained a great appreciation for the very real life that has been breathed into that theater's walls, and how remarkable it will be that it has been reborn as a 21st century interdisciplinary performance space (OK, a "performing arts center"). Kudos to the team that put the program together, including artistic director Jonathan Secor and managing director Beryl Jolly. There was a tremendous buzz in the audience (and all around town), and if this is a hint of the shape of things to come, Great Barrington, Massachusetts, just has had a huge infusion of cultural life injected into its veins. 6/9/2005 ![]() |
