Melissa Ferrick pulls a Prince and plays all the instruments on her newest album, quite an impressive feat on songs like “Beijing,” fueled by the hint of an African soukous pulse in the guitars washed over by a wave of organ chords, on the guitar, drum and female choir of the Ani DiFranco-like folk-funk of the title track or the Ani DiFranco-like folk-jazz of “Nebraska,” featuring Ferrick on trumpet. But the approach is equally effective on more intimate numbers like “Streetlight” on this album which will please long-time fans and surely make new ones. [6/6/04 ]
