The pairing of a contemporary jazz big band and the European mystic visionary as interpreted by contemporary poet Paula Tatarunis works surprisingly well on this adventurous recording of an improvisational cantata written by Darrell Katz and performed by Boston’s spectacular Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra, which can swing, funk, fuse and go far out within one song. Vocalist Rebecca Shrimpton makes Tatarunis’s poetry surprisingly personal and brings Weil boldly to life, while Katz’s compositions build operatic settings with a jazz grammar and vocabulary.
