The Von Bondies

The Von Bondies

“Pawn Shoppe Heart” (Sire)

The Von Bondies’ major-label debut could well tip the balance of Detroit-bred, garage-rock from novelty to full-fledged trend. Producer Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads, Live) gives the group a vintage ‘60s sound that showcases Jason Stollsteimer’s urgent, bluesy vocals – one part Jim Morrison, one part Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. The guitars, played by Stollsteimer and Marcie Bolen, sting and crunch, and Bolen and bassist Carrie Smith lend contrast on backing and occasional lead vocals, lending a hint of ‘60s girl-group by way of L7. Fun and catchy enough to convince a listener that rock isn’t quite dead yet. [ 3/28/04 ]
