“Obrigado Brazil: Live in Concert” (Sony Classical)
Those who recall the somewhat damp, limpid performance Yo-Yo Ma and company gave in the Brazilian crossover concert at Tanglewood last August will be shocked upon listening to this bright, lively recording of the same ensemble’s concert at Carnegie Hall one month later, on which Ma and small ensemble swing the material – which goes beyond the Brazil of the title to include a hodgepodge of Latin repertoire. Clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera was in a particularly soulful mood and his bittersweet tones nearly steal the show from the cellist, who boasts not inconsiderable ability to be plaintive. The program is varied and diverse, and comes to life whenever vocalist Rosa Passos chimes in. [ 3/14/04 ]
